Plan Plan your stay academically

Since 2009/2010 new and old study programmes coexist. The new undergraduate courses, adapted to the European Harmonization standards, called GRADOS, have been introduced progressively since their first year of studies, year by year. In the academic year 2013/2014 all new degrees have been activated until the 4th year of studies, with the exception of Nursing and Medicine, that will be in their third year of existence. The old degrees are progressively disappearing as they are no longer being taught in theirs first years. Therefore we advise students to look mainly for subjects of the new degrees called GRADOS and if necessary, look for last year courses in the old degrees. Subjects in the old degrees with group Z are not offered to exchange students, because there is no teaching left.

Therefore, it is very important to check the LLEU, where the course offer for the year 2013/14 will be published at the end of June 2013.

As an undergraduate Student, you should choose mainly subjects from the degree programme you have been admitted, although you will be able to take subjects in other related programmes under supervision of an academic tutor. As a Master Student, you will be able to choose subjects only from the Master programme where you have been admitted. There should exist a bilateral agreement at Master level with your home institution in your field of studies

Language of teaching

80% of the teaching is done in Spanish and the rest in Catalan, 17% and in English 3%. We advise students to have studied previously at least 2 years of Spanish to make sure that their stay is academically successful.

Spanish and Catalan courses

Every semester the Language and Terminology Service (SLT) organizes specific courses of Spanish for international students. These are run at three levels: initial, intermediate and advanced (A, B, C). They also offer Catalan courses at beginner’s level. Exchange students are expected to have a basic grasp of the Spanish language, which is to say, they will have studied the language for at least two years at University and know the language enough to get by in everyday life and in lectures.

The courses are provided both semi-presentially or virtually on-line. The virtual courses have two options, either the Aula Virtual UJI of our university or the Aula of the Cervantes Institute, called AVE. The semi-presential courses combine dynamic conversational classes with Aula Virtual UJI.

Level A and B courses are offered before the start of each semester. They are intensive 3 weeks language courses meant to prepare students for the longer, regular courses run throughout the semester. The dates of the courses are approximately as follows:

  • 1st semester: mid September - beginning of October
  • 2nd semester: the last three weeks in February. If you are a European student, you can have the possibility of getting an EILC (Erasmus Intensive Language Course) grant if you wish to study Catalan. More information here: https://ec.europa.eu/education/erasmus/doc902_en.htm

Throughout each semester there are two long-lasting Spanish courses at intermediate and advanced level.

Approximate calendar of the semiintensive Spanish courses:

  • 1st semester: from mid October to mid December.
  • 2nd semester: from March to May.

There are morning and afternoon groups at all levels.

You can sign up for Spanish and Catalan courses from August 1st.

Detailed information about registration, times, dates and a description of the content of the courses can be found at:
https://www.uji.es/CA/serveis/slt/adf/ser/clg.html#3

Initial level of Spanish (level A) is only recommended if the student has only studied Spanish for one year. Initial level of Catalan is suitable for students with an advanced level of Spanish. Catalan is the official language of the university and around 18% of the classes are taught in this language. But if you are not sure about your level of Spanish, you can do a level test, prueba de nivel on this web site: https://ave.cervantes.es/#prueba

On finishing the course the student receives a grades report if he takes the final exam and fulfils attendance requirements.

Medical Insurance

European Union citizens must bring the European health card, which they apply for at their national Health Service.

Non-European Union citizens, however, must have a private insurance. Your insurance needs to cover all medical, surgical, pharmaceutical and hospitalisation expenses from minimum 10,000 euros. Besides, the repatriation or transportation in case of injury, illness or death as well as the travel of an accompanying family member of the hospitalised contracting party have to be covered.

If you want to contract your medical insurance here, please, read the following page:
