Admission and Application for Incoming Exchange Students
If you are a nominated exchange student from one of the Partner Universities of our Faculty or University please visit the websitefor prospective students of Leiden University with practical information and to apply online.
Admission Requirements for Exchange Students
- There must be a bilateral agreement between your home university and Leiden University or the Faculty of Humanities.
- Your home university must have selected you as an exchange student and must inform the Admissions Office of Leiden University or the International coordinator of the Faculty of Humanities of your nomination.
- For non-native speakers English: you are required to have a good command of the English language before you arrive, to be able to follow lectures and pass exams in English; for Erasmus students a statement of the Erasmus coordinator that the level of English language meets the requirements suffices. Departmental coordinators may request a test.

Application procedure deadlines
We can only accept exchange students who send in their application forms before the deadlines.
- For an exchange period starting in the fall semester the deadline is 1 April.
- For an exchange period starting in the spring semester the deadline is 15 October.
How to apply
You can apply online after you have been nominated by your home university. Please follow the instructions in the online application carefully and make sure you have uploaded the required documents. Make sure you have submitted the form, otherwise, we will not receive your application and cannot arrange you registration and study plan!
Additional Information
- Academic calendar.
- If a student cannot start in the first week of the course, this should be discussed with the International coordinator. It may then – in consultation with the home university - be decided that the student should start in another period.
- Exams for the fall semester are planned in December and January. Should the student have obligations at the home university in January, this must be notified in the application so arrangements can be made to take the exam at another time if possible or at the home institution. Exams in December will be planned just after the last class and before Christmas break. Students are expected to be available until the last day before Christmas break.
